WE ARE PENTECOSTAL

We are a Pentecostal church with international headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee. North Rome Church of God is a family church whose sole purpose is to minister to the entire family unit. We strive to offer ministry opportunities that meet each need of today's family. Our goal at North Rome is to involve every member of the body of Christ in ministry. Therefore, we teach the priesthood of all believers.

We believe that because of sin, a great chasm existed between God and humankind, so great that humankind could not make their way to God because of the great separation of sin. When Jesus the Christ, the Son of the Living God came, he provided for humankind a way back to God. He provided a bridge that crossed the great divide between God and humankind. He lived a sinless, perfect life and gave himself for a sacrifice for sin. He died for humankind and rose again on the third day so that we might have life with God the Father once again.

We believe in the divinely inspired Word of God. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born of the virgin Mary, died on a cross for our sins, was buried and raised from the dead on the third day, ascended into heaven and is coming again to receive us as His children. We believe in the atonement, that we are saved from our sins by the blood of Jesus. We believe in sanctification that is subsequent to salvation and the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking with tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

WE HAVE BEEN

North Rome is a church with a rich heritage in the city of Rome. As early as 1913, there has been a presence in the city of Rome for God. Beginning in a tent on the corner of Calhoun and North Avenues, our predecessors met and worshipped by the light of lanterns and oil lamps. 1919 brought an official organization into the Church of God headquartered in Cleveland, TN. The church began on Callahan Street in a white frame building and remained there until the early 1930s even though the little church struggled through hard times. During the 1930s, a new building was built and later extensively remodeled to match a new educational building. The Church of God in Rome remained at this location until the spring of 1961.

Paul Stover, pastor during 1961, led the growing church to build a new sanctuary and educational facilities on North Broad Street. At the time, the payments felt staggering. However, under Pastor Stover and other pastors such as J. Frank Culpepper and S.A. Luke, the church was able to manage the money and in March 1981, a special service was held to burn the mortgage, signifying that the Church of God at North Rome was debt-free.

The Church of God at 1929 North Broad Street continued on until a new sanctuary was built in 1990 by Pastor W. A. Bingham. A balcony and larger lobby were added in the next year along with a new gym. North Rome Church of God has continued on in the same location up to the present time with minor upgrades to accommodate the crowds coming to hear the Gospel. The Autumn of 2011 will bring yet another series of sanctuary upgrades, under the leadership of Pastor Harold Jones, to further prepare the North Broad Street property for a bright future in Rome, Georgia.

The North Rome church has been honored to have had a succession of distinguished men to serve as pastor. Some have left to become state or national officials in the Church of God. Others had held similar positions before coming to North Rome as pastor. Each one contributed their time, prayers and efforts to make the church what it is today.

OUR PASTOR

We are honored to have Harold and Barbara Jones as our senior pastors here at North Rome. Our pastors have been with us since the year 2000 and we genuinely appreciate their leadership in the now eleven years since arriving. Pastor Jones is a capable leader with degrees from Lee University in Cleveland, TN, and from University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. Pastor Jones and Barbara have two daughters that reside in the general Augusta, Georgia area with their husbands and families. Pastor Jones is fiercely proud of his children and grandchildren. A favorite pastime is to take in a local ballgame with a hotdog, peanuts, and a cold Coke.

Pastor Jones and Barbara are familiar fixtures in our denominational state of North Georgia for the Church of God. Our pastor has served on the State Council on several occasions and has even served as Evangelism Director alongside then Overseer Delbert Rose, who has now passed on to his eternal reward. Barbara Jones is also known by the women as a leader and women's speaker, and has served on the women's ministries board in North Georgia on several occasions. She also attended Lee University. Barbara has always been a complement to her husband as a leader in her respective areas. Her organizational and decorative skills are often trendsetting, challenging those around her to do everything well and with a sense of pride.
